What Is Price per kg and Why Does It Matter?

Published: July 20, 2026Updated: July 20, 2026

Learn why price per kilogram is the easiest way to compare 3D printer filament deals across different spool sizes.

Filament prices can be misleading because not every spool has the same weight. One listing may sell 1 kg, another may sell 750 g, and another may sell 500 g. The sticker price alone does not tell you which one is cheaper.

Price per kg solves this problem.

Formula

price per kg = price / weight in kg

Example

  • $16 for 1 kg = $16/kg
  • $12 for 500 g = $24/kg

The second spool looks cheaper, but it is more expensive per kg.

Price per kg is especially useful when comparing:

  • single spools vs multi-packs
  • 500 g vs 1 kg spools
  • premium brands vs budget brands
  • specialty filaments like TPU or carbon fiber blends

But price per kg is not the only factor. A very cheap spool may not be a good deal if it tangles, clogs, or has poor diameter consistency. For beginners, a reliable mid-priced PLA can be better than the cheapest unknown listing.

Use price per kg as your first filter, then check material, brand, spool compatibility, and user needs.

Next step: The comparison table normalizes filament prices so you can compare deals more fairly.
