A buying checklist for choosing filament that works well with Bambu Lab AMS systems, including spool size, material, and cardboard spool concerns.

Bambu Lab printers made multi-color printing more accessible, but the AMS adds a few filament buying considerations. A filament that prints well on a normal spool holder may still be annoying inside an AMS.

Before buying filament for AMS use, check:

  1. Spool dimensions: the spool needs to fit and roll smoothly. Very wide, very narrow, or oddly shaped spools may cause feed issues.
  2. Spool material: plastic spools are usually easier. Cardboard spools can work, but some users prefer spool rings or respooling to avoid dust and edge wear.
  3. Filament brittleness: old or brittle filament can snap inside the feed path. This is especially frustrating in multi-color setups.
  4. Material type: PLA and PETG are common AMS choices. Flexible TPU is usually not recommended for AMS feeding because it can buckle or jam.
  5. Winding quality: poorly wound spools increase the chance of tangles. A few dollars saved may not be worth a failed long print.

For beginners, start with standard PLA on a known-compatible spool. Once your setup is stable, test PETG or specialty colors.

Do not buy a bulk pack only because it looks cheap. First confirm that the spool type works well with your AMS.
